Biographical Profile:

Kathleen B. Jones is professor emerita of Women’s Studies at San Diego State University. Formerly the Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Letters (1995-1998) and Chair of the Department of Women’s Studies at SDSU (1993-1995)–the oldest such department in the country–Dr. Jones taught at SDSU from 1980-2003, and has been active in the field of women and politics and feminist theory since 1975. She received her Ph.D. in Political Science from the Graduate School of the City University of New York (1978), her BA in Political Science from Brooklyn College (1970), and has published widely on feminism and political theory in both scholarly and popular journals. Along with Jan Jindy Pettman and Gillian Youngs, she co-founded and co-edited International Feminist Journal of Politics (Routledge, London). Her scholarly works include Compassionate Authority: Democracy and the Representation of Women, (Routledge, 1993); The Political Interests of Gender, with Anna G. Jonasdottir (Sage, 1988), Women Transforming Politics, (New York University Press, 1997) with Cathy Cohen and Joan Tronto, and The Political Interests of Gender Revisited, with Anna G. Jonasdottir (Manchester University Press, 2009). Her creative writing includes a memoir, Living Between Danger and Love: The Limits of Choice, (Rutgers University Press, 2000), and a play based on Grace Paley’s short stories, Acts of Faith, written in collaboration with Sharyn C. Blumenthal. In Diving for Pearls: A Thinking Journey with Hannah Arendt, she wrote about on the influence of Hannah Arendt in her own life. The book won the Barbara Kanner Prize from the Western Association of Women Historians. Jones also served on the City of San Diego Commission on the Status of Women and was their representative on the San Diego Domestic Violence Council from 1995-1998.
